Where are all the cords?

In 2021, Health Canada passed Corded Window Coverings Regulations that came into effect to protect children and pets) from strangulation.

Basically, the new requirements for blinds and window coverings are the strictest in the world and apply to both custom-made products and off the shelf.

Cords, kids, and pets don’t mix, and a strangulation can happens quickly and quietly, even with a parent or care-giver close by.

After 15 seconds a child will go unconscious. Rain damage sets in after 4 minutes and it only takes 22 cm or less to strangle a child. Toddlers from 1–3 are most at risk.

What do you do if you have window coverings with long, accessible cords?

  1. Always keep cords out of reach of children and pets
  2. Never place cribs, beds or playpens near a window with cords
  3. Keep climb-able furniture like chairs and tables away from windows with cords

Improved design and performance

These new regulations have had a huge impact on the industry as it affects all blinds and window coverings sold in retail stores, on-line and through custom orders.

Manufacturers have stepped up with innovation and design to access and adjust your window treatments without the need for cords or strings. In many cases this has improved the design and performance of products raising the industry to a higher bar.

We should all be proud as Canada is the forerunner with these bold new regulations to help protect our children and pets while many other countries, like the US catching up in the next year or so.
