Do solar shades come in different levels of transparencies?
Yes, solar shades help to filter direct sun exposure and come in a variety of light-filtering shade options and UV protection depending on how much of a view you want to have.
What is the “opacity factor” or “openness factor” in solar shades?
The different levels of transparency for solar shades are determined by the openness factor or the opacity factor of the fabric.
The openness factor is a percentage that indicates how much UV rays can pass through the screen. So the lower the number the better the UV protection.
The opacity factor is a percentage that indicates how much light and visibility are blocked by the fabric. The higher the percentage, the more transparent the fabric is, and vice versa.
What are sheer solar shades?
Sheer solar shades (5% – 10%) have a high openness factor and a low opacity factor, which means they allow a lot of light and UV rays to enter the room, but also provide a clearer view of the outside.
They are ideal for rooms that need natural light and do not require much privacy, such as sunrooms, dining rooms, and kitchens. However, they also let in more heat and glare, and do not offer much privacy at night.
Do opaque solar shades block all light?
Opaque solar shades (1% – 5%): These shades have a very low openness factor and a very high opacity factor, which means they block the majority of the light and UV rays from entering the room, and also eliminate the visibility of the outside. They provide the highest level of privacy and UV protection for solar shades.
Can solar shades be used as blackout shades?
No, with solar shades or screens there can be room-darkening qualities but never total blackout. For rooms such as bedrooms, home theatres etc. which need blackout, a roller shade with a blackout fabric is a better choice.
